Description

Closing The Gap: The Coast Line and its Bridges in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties

By Nan Lawler

The Coast Route connecting San Francisco and Los Angeles was completed by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1901. Most of the final work took place in Santa Barbara County, where deep canyons were a major obstacle.

This essay focuses on the completion of the Coast Route, with an emphasis on the many railroad bridges constructed throughout this area.
